Déjà vu or nostalgia? Maybe it’s a little of both…

You know how sometimes you can just be going about your business, daily routine or what have you, and you breathe, and in an instant you catch scent of something that takes you back?  It could be months ago that you’re remembering, or it could be years ago.  Something you’d forgotten ever happened to you, because life keeps moving forward and giving you new things to think about.

That’s exactly what happened to me as I was getting ready for work this morning.  I smelled it, that something to take me back.  It was citrus and clean smelling, like soap and fragrance, but a mixture I hadn’t smelled in probably 12 years.  Immediately I was in the 8th grade again, racing up to dinner from Lindsey Greene’s basement after watching Star Wars, our hair all done up Princess Leia style, and jumping from pillow to pillow to sleeping bag as if the basement floor was lava.  In that instant I remembered the fun, I remembered her and her family.

It felt… magical.  Magical and kind of sad.

She was my new best friend, and every time we slept at each others houses we watched Star Wars.  Our love of all things Star Wars is what brought us together.  We shared books, magazines, pretended we were characters from the movies.  I was always begging my mom to let me sleep at her house, or to let her sleep over mine.

Not long after 9th grade started, in the confusion of our first year in high school, her family made the decision to move.  To Virginia.

You know how, when someone you care about is upset, even if you’re upset you’ll say and do things to make them feel better?  That’s been my secondary mode all my life.

The day she told me she was moving I was devastated, but I thought it must be harder on her so I didn’t let it show.  I found out about it through my other friend, who knew before I did (which in itself kind of hurt).  I couldn’t tell her I knew when she told me outside in the parking lot, on my way to or from the bus or chorus class or whatever, because I didn’t want to tattle on the friend who had already warned me when she was only looking out for me.  But looking back on it, I think Lindsey waited to tell me she was moving until the last possible minute because she didn’t know how I’d react.  And within a week she was gone.

We wrote letters.  For a couple years we wrote back and forth about Star Wars, about school, and boys, and slowly the letters just stopped.  Isn’t that the way with things?  Life happens and you just… move on.  I think about her every now and then, but this morning it hit me like a wave of remembering, and I’ve been thinking about what I miss.  I don’t know where she is, or even who she is anymore, but I hope she’s happy.  I hope her family is healthy and happy, and that she’s got everything she ever wanted out of life.

My Top 10 Favorite Movies Of Right Now {NaBloPoMo 21}

I’m not talking all time, since my mind changes so often: favorite movies, favorite songs, favorite EVERYTHING.  I just love so much that I can’t pick any one thing for long periods of time!  Except Star Wars.  That always always always tops the list.

10.  The Sound Of Music

9.  27 Dresses

8.  Overboard

7.  The Notebook

6.  Anchorman

5.  The Lord Of The Rings (don’t question it!)

4.  Hook

3.  Eternal Sunshine Of the Spotless Mind

2.  The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou

1.  Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back

What are your favorite movies right now?

I just had a really REALLY disturbing thought…

There are dumb  people out there, right?  Like… the really REALLY dumb kind?

OK.  This is hard for me to put this into words.

I’m actually kind of scared of the answer.  You know like that moment in Bambi when his mother gets shot and you’re just terrified, like what’s going to happen now?  OK.  Well, I’m scared that the answer will make me feel like that.  Terrified of the future.

But now that the question has popped into my head I can’t deny it’s existence and to not ask would drive me crazy!

Here goes nothing…

So I was thinking.

Actually I was reading someones blog that had absolutely nothing to do with Star Wars when I was struck by a Star Wars related question.  It’s how it happens, shut up.

Anyway I was reading.  And I thought, wow.  People that aren’t big Star Trek fans are really DIGGING this new Star Trek movie (and just for the record, the blog wasn’t about Star Trek either, my mind just works that way)!  And without missing a beat I wonder if the people that aren’t into Star Trek have even seen the older movies.  And what they would think of them.

AND THEN!!!!!!

And then I wonder!, unbidden!, whether or not there are people out there that actually LIKE the new Star Wars movies.  Like, whether they can like them more than the originals!?!!

I don’t want to know!  BUT I NEED TO KNOW!!!!!!

Can it really happen like that with Star Wars?!!!  WHAT KIND OF WORLD DO WE LIVE IN IF CHILDREN THESE DAYS LIKE THE GROSSNESS OF THE PREQUELS AS OPPOSED TO THE ORIGINAL TRILOGY!?!?!!!

I’m freaking out here!!!!  Someone needs to tell me that it’s UNPOSSIBLE!!!!!!!

Hallway Awkwardness

Hallway awkwardness is widespread.  It’s an unavoidable reality, really.  Like a contagious disease shared between coworkers, it’s an inevitable battle to be fought each time you venture from your office or cubicle into The Building.

Hallways are generally designed long and straight and usually practically empty at any given time, unless you’re in high school where the hallway is the popular place to be.

I get so uncomfortable walking down the hallway at work with one or two other people walking toward me separately, and I get the creepy suspicion that none of us are allowed look at each other.  Especially if we don’t know each other.

Why is it when I see someone coming down the hallway I need to immediately avert my eyes lest it’s assumed that I’m staring?

Why must we pretend that we’re alone in the hallway, that we don’t notice the person coming our way until the exact moment when we’re passing each other and obligated to acknowledge the existence of the other hallway traveler?

And don’t you hate it when they don’t even look at you then?  It’s rude, really.

Hallways should be short and winding, taking turns and being all zig-zagged and bee-lined, making for more comfort to the user.  If you think about it, hallways are really only user friendly for the blind, and for people who rush from one place to the next, or people who aren’t bothered by awkward situations.

Is there some sort of hallway etiquette where you work, some automatic protocol assumed whilst your share the hallways?  Do you ever get the feeling you shouldn’t be looking at anyone all the while you’re headed in their direction?  WHY ISN’T THERE MORE TO LOOK AT IN THE HALLWAY TO KEEP THE MIND OCCUPIED WITH SOMETHING OTHER THAN THE AWKWARDNESS???

Today’s evidence of complete nerdism:  While writing that last paragraph I had quotes from Star Wars Ep: 4 flashing through my head, in particular Uncle Owen to C-3pO at the Jawa droid sale.

The One Where I Get Interviewed

I’ve been interviewed by Grumpy Young Lady!  Here are her questions and my answers:

——————–

1. Describe yourself using 5 words starting with the initial of your first name.
jaded
jumpy
jealous
judgemental
joker
2. Toilet paper – do you scrunch or fold?
I scrunch the first one or two squares and then fold the rest, so it’s kind of like wrapped around my fingers like a mitten.
3. What is it that you love about your partner?
It might be easier to tell you what I don’t love about him because the list would me much smaller, but I’ll tell you some things that I love about him anyway.  I love the way his skin smells.  I love the scar on his nose, and how blue his eyes are.  I love that he thinks about me when I’m not around, and misses me when we’re not together.  I love his nipple rings, his neck, his hands.  I love the way he makes me laugh.  I love the way he makes me feel inside.
4. If you could be a man for a day, what is it that you would like to experience in that 24 hours?
Honestly I’d want to have sex with a girl and see what all the fuss is about.
5. People can’t change.  Discuss.
I think that’s a false accusation.  People DO change, but most change doesn’t happen abruptly.  People that sincerely want to change can change.  People that don’t want to change will always stay the same.  As they get older, people grow and mature.  That’s changing.

******Some extra bonus questions!******

6. Your earliest childhood memory (or ‘image’)?
I was about 2½ years old, and I’d just walked into my grandmother’s kitchen.  She was making fish on the counter and I saw a worm coming out of it.  I haven’t been able to eat fish since.  I also remember being bathed in the kitchen sink.  I wonder how old I was then…
7. If you had to give up either sight or hearing to save the world, which would it be and why?
You’d think this is a tough question, but immediately I decided that I’d give up hearing.  I need to be able to read.  While I like music, it doesn’t affect me the way it does a lot of the people I know.  I can go for weeks without listening to music and not even notice.  I can NOT, however, go weeks without watching a movie or reading a book.
8. Who would you ‘change teams’ for?
Scarlett Johansson.

and Zooey Deschanel

9. Which deceased famous person you would bring back from the netherworld and why?
It’s a complete tie between Henry VIII of England and his second wife Anne Boleyn.  I’m so fascinated with the reign of Henry VIII and the women in his life (including his children and sisters).  There are so many things I would want to ask them about their lives together and apart.
10. Star Trek vs Star Wars? If you don’t like either – which has the craziest fans?
Um, Hi.  Have we met?  I know all the lines to the original three Star Wars movies.  I have posters, old toys, the original theatrical release on DVD, books of all kinds.  While I do love Star Trek (Wrath of Khan, anyone???), Star Wars is just so much more magical for me.  I’m going to go ahead and say that they both have equally crazy fans.  Star Wars freaks (I use that term lovingly) have Star Wars themed weddings, while the majority of Trekkies are probably nerds (see The Big Bang Theory on CBS).  Both are lovable, but Star Wars is my favorite.  Ever.  Now, if by the ‘vs’ you’re wondering who I think would win in the ultimate battle for all the universe I would have to go with Star Wars again.  The Federation has some pretty kick ass weapons and ships, but the Jedi have powers.  POWERS.  You can’t beat powers, no matter how many photon torpedoes you have.
