Musical Band Aids

Today I was reminded of a couple of things. The only one worth mentioning in public forum is that music is an amazing band-aid.

1184774579fg4559

I have written many a blog about how much music affects me. Even on the days where I need complete silence in order to function properly (which rarely ever happens anymore) music still takes on a primary role in my day to day functioning.

I am always singing… humming… referencing music in everything that I do.

whistling

Don’t believe me?!

Last week on date night, D and I were sitting at the restaurant and he could not stop yawning. (yes I am that boring)

D: (yawning)”I think I am going to order some coffee.”
Me: “yeah you aren’t gonna fall asleep on me this time.” (long story)

When the coffee comes:

Me: (singing loudly and out of nowhere as he takes a sip) “I GUESS YOU’RE JUST WHAT I NEEDED!!!!!!!”
D: “Wow. Really?!”
Me: “Yep.”
D: (Taking another sip)
Me: “JUST WHAT I NEEDED!”
D: “Knock it off”
Me: “sorry.”

I really wasn’t sorry though because in the course of our meal I busted at least 2 more 80’s hair band-esque tunes out at appropriate times. I truly believe that one of the reasons that D and I are meant to be is our shared love of being dorky together… but also the shared love of music. D makes up songs for everything. As I write this song he is singing about his love for butter… Not kidding.

Today in a moment of frustration, I plugged into my i-tunes and pressed shuffle. I swear to Goddess that my i-tunes is like a fucking mood ring. It picks precisely the song I need to hear at the moment I need to hear it most. As if it is plugged into my brain or something…. weird….

Anyway, I got caught up in this moment and a bit of the ugly side of me peeked out and allowed my heart rate to rise and my blood to boil a little bit because I felt like I wasn’t being heard… and that my reasonings weren’t being understood. Sometimes my defense mechanism has a tendency to take over my thinking simply to protect my heart… and I spit venom when it is not always necessary to do so. It is something that I work on daily… but I am not perfect.

In the midst of this frustration, I pressed play and “No Rain” came on. That has to be the happiest song ever. It makes me want to wear a bee costume and spin around in circles while it plays in the background on repeat.

untitled

I listened to it over and over until I had no choice but to smile.

copy-of-grin

When I am insert emotion here, music has the ability to allow me to revel in it or it can pull me out of it as quickly as the emotion took over.

I don’t listen to much new music. I have a hard time finding a free moment to browse new artists/albums/singles… so I play it safe and stick to what I know. Usually. Unless someone recommends something good… I usually stay in the music safe zone and listen to all of the music that has impacted my life prior to my current chaos. D is good for new hip-hop/jazz/soul suggestions… but that is not what I am specifically interested in. I love good panty droppers just like the rest of us… but not always.

Do you have any new music suggestions? I always accept free music… and my birthday is quickly approaching… (hint hint but keep the screaming music and tear in my beer shit to yourself hint hint.)

I couldn’t imagine my life in silence, with no music to get me through the day. I wouldn’t want to wish deaf ears upon anyone… because if you all feel like I do… a deaf silence could be just enough of a push to send me over the edge.

Do you have a song that is your musical band aid?

Do you remember the first cassette/CD you ever owned?
What is the very first music video you remember seeing?
What kind (if any) mp3 player do you own? Would you go back to discman’s or stay with the mp3?

What is the ONE song right now that you just cannot get enough of? (it doesnt have to be new…)

First cassette: Bobby Brown. I don’t remember the name of the album but it was the one with “My Perogative” and “Don’t Be Cruel”. I have no idea what happened to it……

I have a Zune. I hated my iPod and pretty much hate all things Apple. I’m one in a million, I know. I love it b/c it has the radio too, so days that I don’t want to search through the 3700 songs on the Zune, I can flip to the radio.

I have lots of different musical band aids, mostly having to do with specific situations in the past… mostly revolving around themes after break-ups/moving on with life. My musical suggestion is a band from Tucson called Sunday Afternoon – they are on myspace and have their own website. Rock but a bit more mellow, not screaming. Good stuff. My fav song is Icarus.

And D reminds me of Ethan, who has started to hum to himself, and when I ask him what he is singing, he tells me he is singing a song about (insert whatever item is in his hand or is in front of him at that moment). Last night, it was the golf ball. Night before, his train set.

    LivingWicked Reply:

That was such a good album. There are quite a few songs that I love of his actually.

We got X a Zune for Xmas. Lucky for us it was a hand-me-down so we only ended up paying like $50 for it and then another $50 for the docking station for his room. He loves it.

I actually LOVE my iphone more than my ipod. it plugs up in my car, has streamed free radio… all of it. Charli ended up with my pink ipod for her room. It helps so much to get her to sleep.

I think it is funny that you compared D to your kid. HA HA HA. So true.

  2. Kylie Says:

First cassette was Michael Jackson Bad – but before that … my first record – yes.. old enough to have had vinyl of my own was Mel and Kim … I was so excited when I opened that present on Christmas Day …

1st Music video I remember would probably be Bad or Beat it … so again Michael …

I LOVE my ipod – and no… would never go back to a bulky discman again –

Musical band aids are too many to mention I think … I have a few specifics – Nan’s song by an english singer Robbie Williams – it’s beautiful and I play it whenever I think about my own Grandmother who died almost 9 years ago – as well as his songs Angels and Better Man – Also Joe Cocker, John Mayer, The Police, The Beatles, Chris Isaak, Simon and Garfunkel – New Kids when I am reminiscing – Melissa Etheridge – the songs I can’t get enough of at the moment are The Weakness in Me by Joan Armatrading, Angel and Witness both by Sarah McLachlan, Welcome to the Jungle and Sweet Child o mine by GNR, Beautiful by Storm Large, the entire sound track of the commitments – which also applies to the Musical band aid category … and I could go on and on and on hahaha … oh and a version of Heard it on the Grapevine by an australian group from way back the doug anthony allstars – they were a musical comedy group who would occassionally sing something serious and blow people away – can be found on youtube – seriously funny and sick stuff but their version of that song is one of the best I have ever heard – my dad stripped the audio for me so I could put it on my ipod … yeah… I love music… feeds my soul…I am always always singing something around the house

    LivingWicked Reply:

    Mel and Kim???

I LOVED that damn album. Bad had dope songs front to back.

I had a feeling you were musically driven. :)

What is the very first music video you remember seeing?I was there for the very FIRST….’video killed the radio star’ by the bugles

What kind (if any) mp3 player do you own? Some very pink player that Jeff and Kay bought me as a joke for my birthday!!! Fooled them, though, I carry it with me everywhere!! LOL

Would you go back to discman’s or stay with the mp3? never had a discman, so no

What is the ONE song right now that you just cannot get enough of? (it doesnt have to be new…)
“Cowgirls Don’t Cry” by Brooks and Dunn…..even though it DOES make me tear up b/c it reminds me of my PawPaw

    LivingWicked Reply:

Purple Rain. :) I love it.

I remember that video well. I was pretty young, but I remember my mom hating that fucking song so much.

    HAHAHAHAH! PINK! HAHAHAHAHA!

I actually really love that B&D song. I can handle some country… not all though.

    flora Reply:

That B & D song always makes me cry – especially the version with Reba…

Veruca Salt “Volcano Girls” is the antedote to any self-pity pouty fests at my house.

Jack Off Jill cures the numb sads

Simon and Garfunkel makes me feel better about being an old soul in a new body

French opera when Spawn is asking for a beatdown

Old Ani D. when I need a cry, new Ani D. when I need to sing

Imogen Heap when I need to remember that it hurt

And The Dwarves and Descendents when I WILL NOT grow up today!

    ROF @ FRENCH OPERA!!!!!!!!!!

Probably the most dramatic beat down EVER!

  5. April Says:

Music is a band aid for me too. And just like you, I tend to stick with what I know so I don’t have a lot of new music on my iPod. I <3 my iPod so much. I stick it in my ear with upbeat music when I need to focus on cleaning – slow, sad songs when I’m depressed and just need to wallow it in a bit for a bit – I even have a playlist for going to sleep. Not kidding. It doesn’t necessarily have to be slow but it can’t have a chaotic tempo or any parts where it suddenly gets louder or changes tempo.

My first cassette… not positive but I think Bon Jovi back when he had The Hair… I not only loved his music but I had a ridiculous crush on him. Shh. Don’t tell anyone. :)

One of my all-time favorites that I can listen to any time, any place, would be the music on George Micheal’s Ladies and Gentlemen The Best Of… there’s 2 discs in the set and one is dance and the other is slow… the slow side gets listened to A LOT.

I’m really diggin’ Norah Jones lately too. I am just in love with her voice. And new artist? Probably Adele. God that girl can sing.

    LivingWicked Reply:

I had a Bon Jovi tape. It wasnt my first but I played that one until it didnt play anymore. I loved Bon Jovi SO much.

Like, I cried when the rumor spread that he had AIDS. Do you remember that>

I havent heard of the GM double disc. I need to check it out. … and I love both Norah and Adele. Both such great artists.

    April Reply:

Oh, if you love George that’s a must-have. I’ve had to buy it like 5 or 6 times because things happen to it and I can’t be without George. My iPod solved that problem though. :)

I don’t remember the AIDS rumor, at all.

    LivingWicked Reply:

OMG. There was this video he did…. umm Dead or Alive I think. Where he is on stage all wet and skinny looking. The rumor spread like wild fire.

  6. Raeann Says:

First cassette. Geez, it was an LP! LOL I had a ktel collection and a collection of Elton John’s hits. This song always makes me feel good when down. Shine a light by The Rolling Stones

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UPbozLRU3so

I always get on a kick with a song or two, where I play them to death, really could be anything, something old or something new. Lately it’s Guarrantee by Eddie Vedder.

    LivingWicked Reply:

!!! Elton John !!! Cass and I were just talking about him yesterday. He has so many great tracks.

  7. prettylittletangents Says:

I love this post! I too am a constant music person.

My musical band aid song used to be “Midnight Train to Georgia” when in high school and college. Something about it calmed me down. Lately it’s “Somewhere over the rainbow” sung by Israel Kamakawoiwo…lmnop….it’s the caribbean/steel drums version.

First cassette was Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam. First CD was Counting Crows August and Everything After (I still love this album)

Very first music video I remember seeing was Billy Joel’s Uptown Girl starring none other than Christy Brinkley.

I heart my ipod. Never going back to anything bulky.

The ONE song right now that I just cannot get enough of is ….incredibly hard to pick. Hmm, let me think :)

I <3 music muchly. It is intricately interwoven into my very soul. When I desperately need a laugh.. I youtube the Uptown girl vid. It makes me giggle every time. I love Billy Joel. To me, he’s the ‘old time music that soothes the soul’. (tho that was bob seger, to me it applies to billy.. lol)
I was also there for the video killed the radio star, and ‘i want my… i want my MTV..’ were the first i remember seeing.
The first music I remember possessing of my very own, was Paula Abdul. lol.

    Jody Reply:

Prince. Anything Prince gets me moving. Can’t hear Prince and NOT smile.

Since GiGi Fest, I also can’t hear Walking on Sunshine, Let’s Stay Together, or PYT without bursting into song and dance.

First cassette was an 80’s mix. I know it included Come on Eileen, Whip It, and Come Dancing by the Kinks! Of course, that cassette was a mix of current HITS at the time! LOL !

My current MP3 is a Sony Walkman (that alone makes me pee, cause my FIRST Walkman was HUGE, held cassettes, and used 8 AA batteries so your pants fell down if you tried to hook it to your belt! I am happy w/ the functions on this MP3, but not the capacity. Its 4G, not NEARLY enough for me. I need like an 80 ! LOL ! But, it was a birthday “gift”, my aunt an MP3 was what I wanted so gave me the money to pick one out. I got what I could afford. I use it CONSTANTLY.

Current song I can’t get enough of is “Don’t Stop Believin’” by Journey. Its been my mantra these days.

    LivingWicked Reply:

Journey rules at all times. For most reasons.

I love music so much that I get almost violently angry when it done poorly… when someone I loved on the radio or CD/Mp3 sucks donkey balls live. Production was the worst thing to ever happen to music.

    /end rant

Do you have a song that is your musical band aid?

Seasons of Love from RENT, nine times out of ten it makes all the badness go away.

Do you remember the first cassette/CD you ever owned?

    Twas the Dirty Dancing soundtrack.

What is the very first music video you remember seeing?

I missed the whole music video thing due to being overseas, and having Baptist parents. By the time I was able to watch MTV it was all reality crap.

What kind (if any) mp3 player do you own?

I have a 1 gig ipod. I switch the music A LOT. It will be permanently stuck in the bathroom when I get my new phone though. This bitch needs tunes to shower with.

Would you go back to discman’s or stay with the mp3?

    Mp3s. Yarr.

What is the ONE song right now that you just cannot get enough of?

The Devil In Me by Kate Voegele And I actually think you might like it.
