Small World…Way Too Small

by PrincessQ on 2009/07/09

So, a few of you know that I joined OKCupid sometime last week because I was bored, it was 3 AM and all my roommates are on it. So ya know, the usual reasons…and like someone said, it’s like shopping for boyfriends…I’m not taking it TOO seriously but I’ve exchanged messages with a couple of guys, winked at a cutie or 5…and I will probably hang out with the CUTEST GUY EVER (Like, I want to lick his face) soon (But nothing serious.) He’s just cool…and funny & a goofball and neither of us are looking for anything serious. Score!

But he isn’t the reason for this post.

So, once in a while, I scroll through my matches…and tonight, I came across this one guy and I scrolled past his picture and then…

*scroll scroll*

Is that…

*blink*

No way.

*blink blink*

*click*

OH MY GOD, IT IS!! OH MY GOD!!

C-Pants: What?

*blink…stare at pictures…read through bio*

OH MY GOD! I KNOW HIM!

*start laughing hysterically*

Let me back up. This dude? He was a senior when I was freshman in high school…since I transferred to a new high school, the only people I knew were my cousin’s friends who were seniors…so I started hanging out with them. He was cool…Bad-ass, dorky Latin guy that I remember chasing around the lower level because he took my notebook (The one my bff and I used to pass notes in class)…I had a MAJOR crush on him when I was a freshman…and then he graduated…but we all kept in touch. I saw him now and again and we’d chat on IM sometimes…Fast forward a few years and I graduate high school and move to VA. I came across his profile on Myspace so we connected again and decided to hang out. Because come on, this was my buddy! And I was 18 now…ya know, legal.

So we meet up…and dude had put on some weight and gotten messy…I mean, he was always a big dude…but he was always clean cut…not so much now. But ya know, still my buddy…so we hung out and when he walked me to my car, he pulled the “I’m moving across the country so I’m going to stick my tongue down your throat” move. I reacted with “Bitch I will bruise your balls the way I bruised your shin back in high school with my heels” move back and avoided the kiss.

And that was that.

Until tonight.

When I came across his profile on OKCupid. 6 years later. And I busted out laughing. He still looks good, he cut his hair and he’s still a big guy but he seems to have pulled himself together.

Will I wink at him? Not in a million years.

But man…thank you OKCupid for giving me the laugh of the week. Of course, I knew that running across someone I knew was a possibility on a dating site but *him*? Wouldn’t have crossed my mind in a million years.

So bring it…because I know you have stories…

Have you been on a dating site? Did you come across someone you know? Did you meet the love of your life? Any disaster stories?

Haha, that’s awesome. I still haven’t jumped into online dating. Of course I’ve heard a million things about it, good and bad, but I am just not ready…to make it official, I guess? My daughter’s mom met her husband that way and they appear to be blissfully happy, haha.

Well, you have to remember that I was on Myspace for so long…and I’ve met guys from there, as well as one occasion where it was at a local radio station’s message boards…so I’ve met people online and ‘dated’ (kissed & other stuff) them…but never officially joined a dating site.

Courtni and I were going to do fake profiles to start posting the funny emails we got…we might still do that.

Yeah, I’ve met and dated women from myspace or wherever, just never an official ‘dating’ site. Of course, I’ve met tons of people, non-dating, that way too, hehe. Y’all should DEFINITELY do the funny emails thing. Guys make themselves such easy targets for that, haha.

HAHA! I like this. I haven’t done the online dating thing, but imagine my face when the bully who used to torment me in high school sent me a facebook friend request and message that said “hey gurl! get at me some time. we could chill.”

This is hilarious. I’ve never been on a dating site, but I did have a similar experience a few years ago. A guy who was a few years older than me used to give me hell, make fun of me and get his popular girl friends to talk smack about me in high school because he thought i was a band geek, then the summer i graduated we were at the same party and he was all over me. he didn’t even remember being a complete dick to me all throughout high school. i basically led him on then told him to fuck off. it was super fun. :)

Isn’t it awesome? I’ve had a couple of guys who were dicks to me in high school react that way when I ran into them after graduation…

Oh lord, nothing but disaster from the more casual (free) dating sites. I usually see profiles of ex’s who want to “wink” at me or befriend me now. The best was when I saw an ex on a dating site and he sent me a message with the standard “my life’s going great right now, hope yours is too… really!” theme. He also mentioned that he’d been seeing someone for about a year or so. Hoping to end the interaction, I wrote back asking why he was still listing himself as single and available. He never responded, but his profile magically vanished, within the hour.

Unfortunately for most gay men, DC is too small. Online dating is like asking for a very twisted version of “This Is Your Life” mixed with ghosts of ex’s past.

The great thing about most of my exes is that they’re either married, or in relationships…or too stupid to get on dating sites (Yeah, I said it.)

I would never pay for a dating site…I wouldn’t even be on a dating site if it wasn’t for boredom…lol

Well DC is small but what about MD? Or *shudder* VA?

but i LOVE how DC is such a small world, even though 3 of my ex boyfriends from college live here…never had any “run ins” on a dating site, but just yesterday i saw someone from my old job at the library out in Ballston, as we were talking we walked out of the lib and he ran into his ex girlfriend who was just walking in!!!!

honestly i walk around EXPECTING to see someone i know.

No disaster stories from dating sites.. I did sign up on one for fun but didn’t actually go out on any dates. Although MAN I wish face recognition software really did exist on cell phones! That would be AWESOME

My husband got on one of those a few years back (before we were together, of course) and a girl that had a major crush on him in high school found him. They got together, started dating, she moved in… next thing you know she pulls what she thinks is a loaded gun on him and pulls the trigger. Watch out for the psycho’s… unfortunately, they don’t have it stamped on their forehead. lol
But you know, my hubby and I met while driving down the road. I had my windows down and he was on a motorcycle. We got stopped next to each other at every red light for like 5 miles. We kept up with each other via Myspace for a few months then started dating. So anything is possible hon.

I’ve met a lot of people who met their SO’s online…and like I said above, I met a couple of people off Myspace…so I know anything’s possible.

I just really want to find myself before settling down.

It is a small world- which is probably why we will all end up on RWDC at least twice….

I’ve run into people I know on dating sites, I don’t say anything because I can imagine them running into me and thinking and laughing like you just did…

way to crush my spirits.

I’ve always liked to think of online dating as blind dating without hating your friends the next day. You only have yourself to blame for a bad first date.

As for a horror story, I have a couple, but the best one comes from my brother. The brother and his wife have a friend who decided to use eHarmony to find a new man. She went through the whole process and, when she finished, the good folks at eHarmony found her perfect match. The only problem was her perfect match was her ex-husband.

I think she asked for her money back.

Haha! I see people I know on it all the time. I never say anything to them (other than finding one of my best friends from highschool on it…I said hi to him because we had lost touch)

I got into online dating YEARS ago when my cousin hated my boyfriend at the time. She signed me up without me knowing and all the sudden I started getting messages on AIM from people I didn’t know. Good times.

I’ve met some pretty awesome friends on it, some really awful dates and some total losers. (Married guy, Bulemic guy…etc)

It’s fun, I don’t take it seriously and it gives me blog fodder. What else can a girl ask for?
